I am thinking about getting my masters degree and want to make sure that I don’t end up wasting my time and money. I don’t live close to a college and would prefer to take classes online due to my current schedule. If you get your degree online from someplace like UMass or Florida State or the like then it will be perfectly acceptable to almost all employers and preferable to a degree in the classroom from some schools.

In fact, the diploma doesn’t say "online" at all and the only way the employer would know is if you tell them or if you attend one of those schools that everyone knows is online.

Reality is that almost every college in the US is now teaching online and very many offer their degrees wholly online. Some people who are stuck in 1982 haven’t figured that out yet and will tell you "online = bad" but you can look around yourself – Harvard, Stanford, UC-Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, and Oxford (among many others) are teaching online so they must think it viable.

I’ve missed a lot of school this year because of illnesses. I’ve made good grades all my life but in the last nine weeks I had three F’s. Well, there is always hope. But aside from that, I’d like to suggest that perhaps you put an ad in your local paper, offering typing services or tutoring.

To be quite honest there just doesn’t exist that "perfect scenario", as much as we’d really really like it to. Companies simply cannot put an area of responsibility into the hands of someone they don’t know and have little control over.

Unless you have excellent credentials, and at least one recommendation from someone fairly powerful on the inside of a company you’d like to work for — forget about it.

You’ve got a fairly limited amount of time to do "extra" things, between laundry and meals and activity time(s). I’m guessing you probably have pets at home too.

Due to the high cost of professional services like accounting and payroll, you’ll cost more than the value you create (at least from a corporate standpoint). Plus, part-time and flex-schedule people are generally part of the high turn-over group — which generates yet more expense as the need to constantly train new people… see what I’m saying here?

Start a new business, providing services of one sort or another. I’m sure you can think of at least one or two things that you’ve said to yourself, "gee I’d pay somebody to do that for me"… work that someone else doesn’t (or can’t) do for themselves is worth a little research.
