Online and Offline Piano Lessons – Striking a Balance

Monday Jul 26, 2010

Piano lessons can be taken up either in the online or in the offline means with both having their pros and cons. There are many numbers of websites offering online piano tutorials for beginners and anyone who wish to continue in any specific mid or high level of piano lessons. Offline piano classes refer to the age old method of learning under a music teacher. The offline methods are well-tried and proved to give the desired results in most of the cases. While assurances can’t be given related to taking up online piano lessons. Online piano lessons are time saving and cost effective. While the offline piano lessons have more probability to give positive results and is a must if one is planning to conduct a piano concert.

If you are a person who doesn’t have an idea to be serious pianist and/ or cannot afford additional time or expense, then online piano lessons is the answer to your needs. You just need a piano; even a most basic one will suffice, along with a good internet connection. It doesn’t cost you much too. Most of the cases the basics and few higher levels of piano lessons can be completed under $50 – $100. Online piano classes are flexible to suit your free time out of your busy schedule. So if these are your requirements, then you can gladly opt for the online piano classes. But make sure to research before you select your online piano lessons. It is advisable to consult with your friends or anyone you know associated with piano lessons regarding the materials you sample or purchase online before following it. This is because not all the websites provide a standard curriculum or the right way to teach piano lessons. As online piano lessons are associated with self study, getting little help before you settle will be a good idea.

For offline piano lessons, make sure you find a good teacher after enquiring among your friends or family circles. Seeking leads from music colleges or universities about finding a good music instructor is also viable. You should be able to face the fact that offline piano lessons can be expensive depending on the instructor you choose and piano lessons you take up. You should also be able to make the commitment of attending your piano lessons on the days as agreed between you and the instructor. Sometimes a single piano lesson may seem to be very serious or long due to the fact that the interaction is one to one. But the credits of offline piano lessons are that, your progress is supervised by a professional and you have plenty of chances to correct your mistakes and know the finer points.

So the optimum balance suggested by many experts is to try your hand at online piano classes for getting your basics and then find a good teacher to continue with your piano lessons. Relying entirely on any one may not be fruitful for all cases.

If you want to teach online classes at a university, should you have yours masters or your phD?

Saturday Jul 17, 2010

My online health teacher is a firefighter as his day job, and teaches Online Classes during his free time. He has his masters. But mind you, this is a community college.

This influenced my plan… I would like to work as a police officer, and teach online criminal justice classes at a UNIVERSITY. Would this require a masters in criminal justice, or a phD?

To teach at a 4-year college or university, you’re expected to have a PhD for almost every field. Community colleges often hire people with just a masters, but universities don’t hire them full time (although they might as an adjunct). Here’s a site that lists current job openings at colleges and universities and what they’re looking for in applicants. http://www.higheredjobs.com

Differences Between Online and Campus Study

Friday Jul 16, 2010

With the advent of the Internet, it’s much easier to obtain your college degree today than it was just 10 years ago. Not only can you research accredited institutions via the Internet, many of those institutions will offer online courses you can use to obtain your degree as well. Some institutions, like the University of Phoenix Online, allow you to earn your degree entirely from online courses.

This is extremely beneficial for working adults and adults who have families, since neither group can take up full-time student status with their busy lifestyles. Plus, it’s unlikely they can go to the campus 4-5 times a week for classes like they could when they left high school, due to work and parental commitments.

However, before you decide to take online courses toward your degree, realize that the learning environment will be considerably different from a traditional classroom.

First, you will have to do most of the coursework by yourself; there will only be limited contact with your online classmates via message boards, instant messaging, and email. There won’t be any physical, social contact unless you meet your online classmates in person in a study group. Social contact isn’t required to complete online coursework.

Second, even though it’s more convenient to attain your degree online, it’s not necessarily easier workwise. In fact, due to the scrutiny and doubts of some of their peers, some professors will expect more work from their online students than their offline students because of the distance learning, the medium needed to convey the material, and the lack of “hands on” teaching. Because students don’t have to attend lectures, it is considered that they should spend equivalent time on their online work.

Third, with no verbal communication, you have to complete the online coursework. Some will find that difficult because they learn better when listening to someone speak, rather than just reading text online.

However, for those who learn better by reading text, they should have little problem with Online Classes. In addition, those who are shy at offering their opinions in front of a class may also benefit more from online courses as they can post their opinions on the message boards and converse with their fellow classmates without ever revealing their identities, which could help them be more confident and be more forthcoming with their opinions and views.

Fourth, many online degree programs are expensive; some are even more expensive than their campus-based counterpart courses. Some universities subsidize their campus operations with their online courses, probably as compensation for the student not going to the campus, paying for parking, eating at the cafeteria, using the vending machines, etc.

However, one advantage in terms of costs when it comes to online courses is that textbooks are usually not required, as lectures, additional notes, assignments, and other materials can usually be downloaded from the Internet.

Fifth, you have more freedom in terms of completing assignments and taking tests and quizzes; unlike the traditional classroom, there is no set time for completing assignments (outside of the end of the semester.) You may have to take tests and quizzes within a week after they are announced, but you still have a 7-day period to work with; in a traditional classroom, the day and hour is decided for you. That is another reason why online classes are so beneficial for working adults and parents – the classes can revolve around their busy lives, not the other way around.

You can get the education you need either via the traditional classroom on campus or via the online classroom on the Internet to further your career or change your career, but be aware that just because the information provided to you is the same material, the manner in which you will receive it and the challenges you will face in learning it won’t be the same.

Has anyone done CCConline classes or other online classes offered by a community college?

Monday Jun 28, 2010

I am working full time and will be my first semester of college. I plan on taking on my pre-requisites online but wanted to know what they are like. Do you have to do the class at a certain time or meet online for discussions? Since I’ll be working full time I won’t have a flexible schedule to be able to do so and wanted to know if Online Classes offered by community colleges are pretty flexible or not? Thanks!

They are pretty flexible. You can do your work whenever you want and turn it in whenever you want. Some classes will have a designated conference time once a week, but not all classes have this.

This article will outline the basic guidelines on how to consider an online nursing degree which will secure you for a brighter future. Get the answers to the following questions in order to make an informed decision:

1. Is the university accredited?

Although graduating from an accredited university does not guarantee jobs or licensure for individuals, it reflects the quality of the educational programs offer by the university. It speaks to a sense of public trust, as well as to professional quality. Thus, it is important to enroll to a university which is accredited by a recognized accreditation agency.

Regional accreditation is the highest level of accreditation a college or university can obtain and is recognized throughout the United States. Examples of regional accrediting bodies include the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

2. Is the nursing school accredited?

Accreditation of a nursing school is a voluntary endeavor, but it ensures the quality and commitment of its educational program in the proper training of nurses. If you are planning to apply for any financial aid or you plan to advance your studies to a higher level in the future, an accredited nursing school is a factor to consider. Online nursing programs offered by an accredited nursing school will also increase your competitive edge in the job market because many employers prefer to hire practitioners with degrees from accredited institutions.

3. What are the lectures like?

Most university programs are purely reading and taking tests, but if you enroll into an online nursing degree program which can offer streaming video and audio lectures, along with textbooks, study guides and CDs; these visual learning material will definite help you to understand your courses better and faster.

4. Does proctored exams needed and can you take the test online? Some online nursing programs require you to take proctored exams at testing centers, which involves traveling to testing centers and paying fees. But there are universities which you can take your proctored exams and complete your assignment 100% online.

5. Do you need to attend physical classes?

Some nursing courses require you to attend a certain hours of physical classes at campus. But there are universities offer the courses fully online. It is good for you to ask and confirm with the university to avoid any crash with your working schedule. If attending a certain hours of physical classes is not possible for you, then 100% Online Classes may be your better option.

6. What are the fees over and above the tuition and textbooks?

Many institutions charge not only tuition costs but also a host of assorted fees that may include application, transcript evaluation, library privileges, graduation and more. Plus, tuition may seem low at first, but then they hit you with extra expenses when you matriculate.

7. How can I contact my professors and classmates?

A worthy University program will give you several options such as chat room, message board, email, MSN or the university may implement their own proprietary online learning system for contacting your professors and classmates.

8. What are the practice project requirements?

This is a very important question. Determine your obligations by asking the following:

  • Do I have to travel to another city? If so, for how long?
  • Are there additional travel costs, or is travel included in my tuition costs?
  • Can I select a preceptor I already know?
  • Can I fulfill the requirements with my own employer?
  • Are there additional fees?
  • How many hours are required?

In Summary

How do online college classes work?

Monday Apr 19, 2010

Generally speaking, if you wanted to obtain your associates/bachelors degree via Online Classes.. how does that work? Is it a work at your own pace kind of thing?

Also, what are a few accredited online schools that offer a variety of degrees?

Thanks for the help!

Each college handles their classes differently, some are learn at your own pace and others are more regimented. Some have video based classes and others rely on more presentation formats and reading.
My best recommendation would be to contact a number of colleges to find the best fit for you and your needs (class format, schedule, career opportunities, etc.). Too often people enroll in the first school they find rather than taking the time to find the best school for them. Taking that time now could save you a lot of time, money and frustration if you choose the wrong school.
This site has some good info on regionally accredited online degrees and some colleges that offer them to help expand your search:

I think you can enter your info on there for any colleges you are interested in and they will send you more info for free. Good Luck!
