Online Study for the Next Generation

Sunday Apr 4, 2010

From the time we are small children through our late teenage years, we are continually in school.  After graduation from high school it is time to decide what it is we want to do with the rest of our lives, go to university, get a degree and embark on our professional careers.  However, going to university costs money and many kids are not ready to go straight to university after graduation.  For those who decide to take some time off before going to university to work and earn some money, there is still an option available that will allow you to get an education without having to sit in a classroom and adhere to a stringent schedule.

Online distance education or E-learning is the ideal solution for those who do not want to go straight to university.  Not only can you continue to work and earn money but you can learn valuable skills that will help you in your job and allow you to advance professionally without having to go to daily classes.  In actuality, online classes can benefit a student greatly by allowing them the ability to gain practical work experience coupled with a formal education.  This can serve them well once they do decide to go to university or can help them continue their career path with online degree programs where the knowledge they learn can be immediately put to practical use.

When you take Online Classes, you have the advantage of not having to go to a physical classroom on a daily basis.  You can study on your time schedule and learn at your own pace.  The classes that are available for online study also give you a much more practical advantage in the work place with the variety of classes that are available.  You can choose a diploma program in several areas,  certificate 4 courses  or you can take short courses for continuing education.  All classes are designed so that you can learn and earn at the same time.

Some students who choose to go to university and work at the same time have a difficult time juggling both.  The time constraints can put additional stress on a student and they will find they are not excelling in either endeavor.  In a traditional classroom setting there are certain times when you must attend class.  This means you have to physically be present, listen to the course material, absorb it and understand it.  Additionally, you will have tests to prepare for and homework that is assigned and due with stringent deadlines.  Add this to a full work load and it is nearly impossible to get everything done.  Even if you can get everything finished and be in class when needed and be on time for work, how much of the course work is actually sinking in?

With online study, though, these stresses are completely eliminated.  You can study your course work when you have the time.  You do not have to sacrifice your work schedule to accommodate a class schedule.  So, if you get home from work, relax for awhile and then feel motivated to study, you can do it then.  You can take some time on the weekend or in the middle of the night.  Whenever you feel you are refreshed and ready to learn, you can log on to your class and learn the material.  You can work on your assignments at your leisure and put forth the effort when you are motivated.

Online study certainly helps with scheduling conflicts.  However, the added advantage to online study is knowledge retention.  When you study when you are at your best you are more likely to retain what it is you learned.  This can be a significant advantage over traditional university study.  Not only that, you have the ability to review and re read your course work until you have a firm grasp of the concepts.  When trying to work and continue your education, this can be especially beneficial.

For those who wish to take some time off after graduation to earn some money but still want to continue their education, online study offers the ideal solution.  It will allow you to learn while you earn without the stresses of a stringent schedule.  You can work at your own pace from the comfort of your own home.  In addition, you have the potential to retain more of what you learn than if you were in a traditional classroom setting.  This will allow you to put your skills to immediate use for advancement within your job and will also give you an advantage once you do decide to go to university by granting you practical work experience along with your education.

Do you think these is true Men with bulldog-like faces are more attractive then others?
A recent study of the skulls of human ancestors and modern humans finds that women, and thereby, evolution, selected for males with relatively short upper faces. The region between the brow and the upper-lip is scrunched proportionately to the overall size of their heads.

Among the men who fit the bill: Will Smith and Brad Pitt.

In a past study, researchers found a similar facial pattern in chimpanzees, with males having relatively shorter and broader faces compared with females, controlling for body size.

Men with "mini mugs" might have been most attractive to the opposite sex and thus most likely to attract mates for reproduction, passing along the striking features to the next generation and so forth, said lead study author Eleanor Weston, a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum in London.

"The evolution of facial appearance is central to understanding what makes men and women attractive to each other," Weston said. "We have found the distance between the lip and brow was probably immensely important to what made us attractive in the past, as it does now."

Whereas past studies have suggested facial symmetry and facial masculinity play roles in this game of desire, none have provided evidence of an evolutionary shaping of male and female faces.

"I think it’s a very nice approach," said Randy Thornhill, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of New Mexico, referring to the study. Though not involved in it, Thornhill agrees with the finding that certain facial features evolved due to sexual selection.

Facial coordinates

The researchers calculated certain facial coordinates on 68 males and 53 female skulls from a contemporary native southern Africa population ranging in age from infant to 30 years old. Measurements included distances between the point between the eye brows and upper lip and from cheekbone to cheekbone.

Weston and her colleagues also examined facial data from fossil hominin skulls dating back to 2.6 million years ago, unearthed in Kenyan deposits as part of the Koobi Fora Research Project IV. These skulls represented five species: Homo erectus, Homo ergaster, Paranthropus boisei, Australopithecus africanus and Paranthropus robustus. These facial coordinates were then compared with the contemporary coordinates.

In spite of their bulkier bodies (about 15 percent more massive than women’s bodies), and similarly broader faces, men have upper faces similar in height to women’s faces, the scientists found. But compared with the rest of the head, a guy’s mid-face is compressed. The differences held throughout human history.

A simple ratio of upper face length to broadness could serve as a proxy for facial attractiveness, the scientists say in a report on their research published in the online journal PLoS ONE.

Masculine appeal

The scientists are not certain why today’s distinctive male face and its proportions evolved.

"A shorter upper face does serve to exaggerate the size of other face features such as the flare of the cheeks and the size of the jaw, but this might not be why it developed," Weston told LiveScience. "Rather the shorter [and] broader the male face the more ‘masculine’ and the less ‘feminine’—based on biological face changes that take place during growth and development—the individual becomes," she said.

Also, this facial development was accompanied by a shrinking of guys’ canine teeth, so men appeared less threatening to competitors, yet attractive to mates.

While the scientists who authored the current study examined skulls and did not specifically study how modern faces fit the findings, the Natural History Museum press officers applied Weston’s findings to a "quick and dirty" survey of photos of celebrities.

They came up with a list of stars with masculine faces, listing them from most to least masculine according to facial dimensions: Will Smith, Peter Andre, Justin Timberlake, Thierry Henry, Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Johnny Depp and Kanye West.

I think it all depends on the guy. Their eyes, faces structure, lips, all of that. It also depends on the girl. Does she like a clean face or not. This world is so diverse there is no one rule.

Charles Darwin is the father of evolution, correct? Did you know that he said before he died, that there is no way evolution is right? He said that God created us, and that is the only way.
